The head-on accident involved a Ford Ranger twin-cab and a haulage truck along the R101 highway near Mokopane town at around 3am.
South Africa police sources say the Ford double cab the victims were traveling in was driving towards Pretoria while the haulage truck was going in the opposite direction. Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Ronel Otto said they had since opened a case of culpable homicide against the haulage truck driver.
“The incident occurred between Mokopane and Naboomspruit. The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries while two other people from the small vehicle survived and were taken to Mokopane hospital” said Colonel Otto.
“The identities of the deceased are not known yet though we believe they could be Zimbabweans.”
Colonel Otto said further investigations into the accident were already underway. She also called on motorists and other road users to always abide by the road traffic regulations in order to avoid unnecessary loss of life.
“We want to urge motorists to always rest during long journeys especially when travelling at night. Also make sure that your vehicle is road worthy,” she said.
“The identity and country of the others have not been established yet. The process is still ongoing,” said Colonel Otto.
